Effective Presentation Skills Training
Giving a presentation can be nerve wracking, no matter if it’s the first time or the 100th time. This is because every time is about something different, even if it’s the same topic that you’ve given before. Having to give a presentation to multiple groups is a risk. You hope the reaction will be good, but even with preparation, it may not. Any program, such as PowerPoint, where there are options, can be utilized to make the right one. Here are some ideas that might help you out.
First and foremost, do your homework about what the presentation is about and the audience will be. Find as much information as possible about what the presentation needs to be on. This can be as simple as going to a store and looking at how a product is displayed versus its competitors. Or it could take weeks of endless searches online, discussion panels to find out what people like and dislike, and corresponding with others that have opinions about what you may be trying to change or start.
This is only a small part though. Knowing the audience is more important because a good presentation given wrongly to a prominent audience can cause the reaction wanted to not happen. If it will be a room of businessmen, the presentation needs to be very precise and done in a business like manner. However, if you are giving a presentation to a group of toy makers, it can be fun and have jokes to get a point across. The tone of the presentation is set with how it is shown.
For a business presentation, simple transfers from one slide to the next need to be done Bolding and straight page changes are best in this manner because they show the seriousness you are trying to portray. Bullets that come from the top, bottom, or left side are the best as well. Funny text colors or fonts are not appropriate and could be seen as unprofessional. Also for a presentation like this to the point is better, which can mean fewer screens.
For a presentation that is less formal, you can play and have fun. Every page can have a different background color with a different font color, if you are giving a presentation that would benefit from this. Be careful not to go overboard on this as even in a fun atmosphere it can be construed as unprofessional.
Having words and pictures come in from different sides each time will keep them guessing. This can be good but bad at the same time. It needs to be light-hearted yet portray that you can be professional at the same time. However, with that in mind, don’t shy away from pictures to bring a smile to someone’s face.
Presentations are not only used in work situations but also in schools, but secondary and college level. As we move more towards a computer life, programs are being utilized to challenge students in new ways and make them learn at the same time. Giving a presentation in school can be as simple as a book report highlighting what was learned to a full blown presentation of a class project that is key to graduating.
For something like a book report, something more informal will do with color pages, special fonts, and bullets that roll in from the sides. A class project will take more work and could even be a test for real life experience where you might use the program in a career. So it will test you to know what is expected from a professional and what isn’t.
