Presentation Tips and Ideas

Presentations can be very stressful for many of us. But in order to accomplish your tasks you will need to speak in public whether you are working with a large group of people or a student presenting in class.

Here are some presentation tips that I have used, observed, or was given by others to help me out.

Presentation Tips:

- Become familiar with the place where you will be speaking. Always arrive early and make sure you check the microphones and any other visual aids you will be using. If possible have a backup system available.

- Know your material thoroughly. If not your nervousness will increase.

- If you make minor errors in your speech, don't worry. Remember nobody knows your script.

- Try not to move around. Its very distracting to listen to a person who is constantly wandering around the stage.

- Add humor in your presentation if possible.

- Make eye contact with your audience. Look at a person in the audience for about 2-3 minutes.

- If you have any handouts to be given, make sure they are ready and give them out at the appropriate time.

- Sometimes it is easy for students to make presentations in their classrooms because they are presenting in front of their friends, so if you can come early and greet your audience as they arrive. It will help knowing you are not talking in a room full of strangers.

- If using flip charts, use colors wisely. For example, blue, black, and green colors are most visible. Use bright colors for small graphics so they stand out. Remember colors will have psychological and physiological effects on your audience. For example, blue which  is  associated with sky, water, and  ice  can be used to show something that is cool and subduing, green which is  associated with nature can be used to show something that is refreshing or peaceful.

 - Timing is very crucial. Do not talk for a long time. Your audience may lose interest and walk away. During your talk ask the audience to do something to get them moving.

- When it comes to closing,  keep in mind  the last thing you say will be remembered the most. So say something that would motivate, or challenge your audience. Where appropriate use humor.

- Lastly relax. Do some relaxing exercises before you start.
